What Is Instructional Design?

Think of instructional design as the secret sauce behind remarkable learning experiences. It's the art and science of crafting the perfect learning journey for learners.

Imagine you're baking cookies. You have all the ingredients, but how do you put them together to create something delicious? That's where a recipe (storyboard) and baker (instructional designer) come in handy. The recipe tells you when to mix, when to bake, and when to savor the sweet rewards.
Instructional design is like creating the perfect recipe for learning. It blends together:
1. Learning Objectives
These are your goals—what you want your learner to achieve. Like deciding you want to make the world's tastiest chocolate chip cookies.
3. Learning Methods
This is how you deliver the content. Think of it as choosing between baking, grilling, or frying your cookies (metaphorically, of course).
4. Assessment
How do you know if the cookies (or learning) turned out right? Assessment helps you measure success.
2. Content
Your key ingredients, the information or skills you want to teach. Just like the flour, sugar, and chocolate chips in our cookie analogy.

5. Feedback and Improvements
Just like adjusting your recipe for even better cookies next time, instructional design involves constant tweaks and improvements.
Why Does Instructional Design Matter?
Instructional design isn't just a buzzword. It's your secret weapon for making learning engaging, effective, and enjoyable. It turns "I have to learn this" into "I can't wait to learn this!"

At The Learning Designers we are experienced instructional designers who are focused on your learners and their unique needs. We will work with you to complete a needs assessment, guide you through content development (or we can research and develop the content for you!), and begin to build out your learning recipe in a meaningful way.
Accessibility
Equitable access for everyone is a key pillar at The Learning Designers. We take accessibility very seriously and infuse all of our clients’ work with inclusivity and diversity. Check out our Accessibility page for more information.
Eye-catching Design
Part of our design work is also on the visual representation and user experience (UX) of your learning experience. It doesn’t matter how infused with sound pedagogical theory your content is if people are distracted by poorly designed graphics and can’t figure out how to navigate. We focus on beautiful, clear, engaging learning experiences.
